Transfer listed striker Mark Rosegreen threw VS a lifeline on Tuesday night with a goal seconds from the final whistle.

It was a late, late show which totally transformed the prospects.

"We played well enough to win," said manager Jimmy Knox.

"Before the goal we faced scoring three in the second leg at Butlin Road next Wednesday.

"The away goal counts double and now it means an easier task to get into the last sixteen."

Rob Smith threw away this almost inevitable early VS chance to make their better class football tell.

"The keeper got a hand to the ball as I went past him and the shot slipped off a defenders' calf," he later explained.

VS paid dearly in the 38th minute when Mick Shearer slid-it to rob Gary Grogan after Anthony Ebony and the slipping Nigel Niblett were left standing by Keith Lockhart's pace.

"It was a good, fair tackle and I won the ball," said Shearer.

But Corby ref Gerry Lee ordered otherwise and Lockhart beat Martin with the penalty.

Nine minutes after the restart central defender Nigel Niblett was blaming himself for the second Cambridge goal.

"I committed myself too early," he said of the missed challenge which saw Grogan run in to shot the ball past Martin.

Afterwards he spoke as if the world had fallen in on him. "I don't like us losing," he said.

Wayne Scally and Steve Ross interspered gritty displays with flair and Rosegreen was less than a foot away from at least a hat-trick.

He got his reward with just enough time to spare for play to go back to the centre circle and restart before the final whistle.

Mark Boyland helped the chance on its way with a twisting run to the byline for a centre Rosegreen was just inches from meeting.

And Rosegreen picked himself and VS up off the floor just in time to head home the follow-up cross from Smith on the opposite wing.

BROMSGROVE ROVERS 6 CAMBRIDGE CITY 0

THE deadly strike force of 'Smash and Grab' weighed in with five goals to take their combined tally for the season past the 50 mark as Bromsgrove Rovers ran riot in this Beazer Homes League Premier Division clash. 'Smash' is Chris Hanks whose hat-trick

BY JOHN CURTIS

pushed him onto the 50-goal mark and 'Grab' is he has netted 131 times in 274 games for Rovers.

'Grab' is former Kidderminster Harriers striker Mark Rosegreen whose brace also brought his haul to 27 since his summer move from Redditch last year. With giant target man Sylvester Cunningham — operating on Saturday in a midfield role — also boosting his tally to 16, it is easy to see where Rovers strength and salvation this season has been in a season savaged by injuries.

But on Saturday it was the workhorses in the middle of the park who set up Rovers' biggest win for several seasons.

Manager Phil Mullen reverted to a 4-4-2 system to snuff out the influential Cambridge midfield who worked hard and so effectively.

Only Mark Cook did well in a holding role while Russell Parmenter and runners — who must have covered every blade of grass on the pitch, also figured prominently.

Cambridge's frustration at being unable to contain the tenacity and commitment not always seen by them in recent matches eventually boiled over in the 84th minute when play-maker Gawthrrop was sent off for head-butting Cook.

After a bright opening, the visitors could make no headway against Rovers, which was literally patched up.

Full-back Tony Costello, normally accustomed to operating playing in midfield, well even though he had the handicap of a heavily strapped broken wrist. And central defender Martin, Rovers' only established defender in the back four, was an inspirational figure despite needing nine stitches in a head wound after the match.

Allen, who left out midfielder Peter Allbutt, said: "I told them to do a specific job and to block the middle of the park because I know how they like to play.

"It was a battle in the first half but we showed the fight which has been the part of our game which has been missing.

"Everyone knows that we have the players to do well if teams let us play but you need more than that."

Hanks (44, 51 and 84 minutes), Rosegreen (61 and 73) and Cunningham (62) were the Rovers scorers.

Rovers: Attwood, Brighton, Lowell, O'Connell, Truswell, Parmenter, Webb, Cook, Hanks, Rosegreen, Cunningham. Subs: Allbutt, Jones.

A late second half goal spare earned a half of Birmingham the Senior Cup final Birmingham.

Tuesday night's victory at the Victoria Ground over Hednesford gives Rovers their fourth qualifying round and the potentially money-spinning tie with Wolves or the Hawthorns in April.

Rovers manager Phil Mullen, we'd like to get Wolves because of their big names out.

"We've had some difficult times this season with injury problems so making the final is a tremendous achievement."

A goal-less first half saw Rovers squander plenty of goal chances.

Their patience finally paid off and they took the lead after 60 with Alan Lowell netting Nigel Conniff's shot slipping through Rovers Richard Attwood's legs.

Hednesford struck back 12 minutes later — Bradford's shot slipping through Rovers' keeper Richard Attwood's legs.

Two seconds later, Rovers went in front — Pete Allbutt's cross was firmly and decisively headed home by Cunningham.

Mark Rosegreen put the result beyond doubt with a powerful header four minutes later, his 25th goal of the season.

This Saturday, Rovers return to Beazer Premier Division action when they entertain Cambridge City at the Victoria Ground, in Birmingham Road, is 3pm.

ROVERS moved up to sixth spot in the Beazer Home League Premier Division with a less than convincing victory at the Victoria Ground on Tuesday night.

Despite notching up their best home tally of the season so far, Rovers still struggled at times against second from bottom Bedworth.

The home side took the lead after just four minutes — Mark Rosegreen converted a penalty after he was tripped by United keeper Hewitt.

Leading scorer Chris Hanks made it 2-0 after 60 minutes, knocking the ball home from a yard for his 24th goal of the season.

Rosie grabbed his second goal ten minutes from time, pouncing on the United keeper's indecision following Parmenter's corner.

A LATE second half revival gave Rovers three vital points in their campaign for promotion.

The Reds, playing their first League game for nine weeks took a deserved lead after just three minutes.

Parmenter's corner from the left was headed on by Jones to captain O'Connell who in turn powerfully headed home.

The visitors equalised with a well struck left footed volley by Payne after 31 minutes and five minutes later they went ahead.

The Rovers defence stopped dead awaiting an offside decision but Dakin simply kept on running, chipped keeper Attwood and followed up to score the easiest of goals.

Rosegreen made no mistake after 64 minutes firing home a penalty after Brown had been tripped just inside the box.

And after 74 minutes Rovers went ahead. Rosegreen flicked on and Hanks showed some great control before applying the clinical finish.

United's misery continued two minutes later when Smith put the ball past his own keeper.

But just on the stroke of full-time Smith made amends for his earlier error with a late goal.

ROVERS can look forward to a Clubcall Cup second round meeting with non-league side Barnet after a superb win over Boston United at the Victoria Ground on Tuesday night.

Paul Webb was making a long-awaited return after suspension but Alan Lowell was missing because of a three week ban imposed after he was sent off while playing for Sunday league side Preston 81.

A noisy crowd of 727 saw Rovers take the lead after 37 minutes. Chris Hanks's floating cross from the right was met by an unmarked Sylvester Cunningham who firmly headed home.

But Boston, who are in a stronger league than Rovers, were back on level terms just after the break. Beech's drive was fumbled by Richard Attwood and Cook added the clinical finish.

Rovers grabbed the winner four minutes from time. Webb set off on a blistering run down the right wing and Mark Rosegreen was neatly placed at the far post to head past McKenna.

Rovers stormed through to the third round of the Westgate Insurance Cup with a convincing victory over Midland Division side Halesowen Town on Tuesday night.

This was a superb all-round team performance and easily one of their best so far this season.

Town simply had no answer to Rovers, who poured on the pressure and turned on the style.

Within the first 20 minutes, Rovers had pulled back the 2-0 deficit from the first leg at the Grove last week.

Mark Rosegreen gave them a great start with his 17th goal of the season when he latched on to Russell Parmenter's corner from the right after just two minutes.

In-form striker, Sylvester Cunningham levelled the aggregate score after 17 minutes.

Stewart Brighton's through ball from midfield found Rosegreen on the edge of the box.

The ex-Redditch man flicked on to Cunningham who showed some nifty footwork before firing past Hughes.

Rovers could do no wrong in an exciting game which thrilled the noisy Victoria Ground crowd of 1,182. Every player was in superb form — Richard Attwood's heroics in goal constantly frustrated Town, Brighton grew in confidence at left back and new man Nick Kershaw was also impressive.

The home side made it three after 67 minutes. Nigel Conniff's powerful shot from 25 yards out hit the bar and then bounced past the unhappy Hughes into the net.

Ten minutes later the Reds made the game safe — striker Chris Hanks sliding the ball home following a goalmouth scramble.

Bromsgrove Rovers 2 Moor Green 0

RAMPANT Rovers have reached the first round of the FA Cup for the sixth time, but not without a few tense moments.

Fellow Beazer Homes League Premier Division side Moor Green made the Reds battle every inch of the way in front of a noisy Victoria Ground crowd of 1,219, the best of the season so far.

Rovers' opponents in the first round on November 19 will be Welling United or not quite Wolves or Sheffield United who supporters had dreamed of meeting.

But assistant manager Pat Lynch wasn't too disappointed about the seemingly low-key draw.

Pat said: "It means we've got an excellent chance of making the second round for the first time, which would be an even greater boost for the club."

Rovers got off to a fairy-tale start in Saturday's game with a goal after just seven minutes.

Nigel Conniff's free kick from the left was met by Sylvester Cunningham who powered a superb header past former Rovers 'keeper Derek Allen.

But the Moors came back at the home side, which included Paul Cooper and Richard Attwood making welcome returns after injury.

After 17 minutes, the visitors wasted a great chance to equalise Fearon neatly back heeled the ball to Hadley, who in turn found Davies on the left but his effort went wide.

At the other end, Rovers' leading scorer Chris Hanks missed a golden opportunity to put his side further ahead and increase his individual goal tally so far this season to 16.

A mix-up in the Moors' defence led to Allen running way out of his goal but a rushed Hanks could only blast the ball over the bar.

The second half kicked off at an equally frantic pace and Rovers went further ahead after 59 minutes.

Ian Brown, who was booked for handball in the first half, surged through the middle and found Cunningham, whose first time shot could only be parried by Allen.

Hanks's effort hit the post but Mark Rosegreen was on hand to nudge the ball home from six yards out.

BROMSGROVE Rovers are just one game away from a sought after slot in the first round of the FA Cup.

Their victory in Saturday's third qualifying round clash at the Victoria Ground overcame Bedworth United.

— Hanks increased his season's tally to 11 when he latched on to a desperately short back pass by United defender Timms.

The sharp striker calmly rounded the keeper to slide the ball into an empty net.

Rovers increased their lead just before the break when Mark Rosegreen scored their individual goal to take the break.

Then Rovers pounced on a mix-up in the routine matches.

"And in the 50th minute, Rosegreen, who is one of the Valley Sports club scored a powerful shot hit the post and Rosegreen knocked in the rebound.

United grabbed a consolation goal four minutes from time through Albert Johnson.

At the other end, Rovers — booked for handball in the first half — had won a succession of corners. Despite lacking several first team players through injury Rovers' performance "wasn't very fluid."

Par said: "We're not that worried about a home draw. If we get them at home it's a big plus."

ROVERS cruised into the second round of the Birmingham Senior Cup with a comfortable win over Lye Town at the Victoria Ground on Stourbridge Road on Tuesday night.

The visitors dominated from post to post after kick-off, despite lacking several first team faces, with John Cooper, Kevin Trussell and Richard Jones and John Ford coming through.

The game came after 33 minutes.

Martin, Hallam laid on the perfect pass for scorer Chris Hanks coolly chipped the ball over advancing keeper.

Lye, who play in the Midland Alliance Premier Division, came at their more prestigious opponents in search of an equaliser in the second half, but Rovers' John Jones stood firm and the home side was rarely troubled.

Ian Bollom fired a good time after Cooper's second half cross and Jones stood firm and the game came after 33 minutes.

The second half saw Ian Bollom fire a long blast to send a short corner routine on.

But Rovers quickly over-ran and with speed and ability surged forward from the start.

And the early pressure paid off as Rovers first and second halves saw the young striker Ian Bollom arrive at the right time — with the help of a defensive error from Lye midfielder Paul Molleu — not to see a goal to Mick Shearer's shot.

Martin, Hallam laid on the perfect pass for scorer Chris Hanks.

Rovers' FA Cup celebration!

Bromsgrove Rovers 2, Alvechurch 0

BRILLIANT Bromsgrove Rovers stormed into the third qualifying round of the FA Cup with a stunning victory over local rivals Alvechurch.

The Reds' opponents in Saturday's clash will be Bedworth United, who are currently propping up the Beazer Homes League Premier Division with just three points from eight games.

A noisy crowd of 1,189 — Rovers best of the season — packed into the Victoria Ground on Tuesday night confident of an absorbing second replay and they weren't disappointed.

Rovers kicked off determined to stamp their authority on the game and 'Church were completely left behind in the first half as the home side poured on the pressure and turned on the style.

Striker Mark Rosegreen was in terrific form and was obviously keen to prove a point after being substituted during Rovers' league match at Crawley Town on Saturday.

Olympic gold medallist Ian Taylor was the guest of honour at the Victoria Ground and Rosie appeared to have discovered his own Midas touch.

After 28 minutes Rovers took the lead with a hot favourite for goal of the season. Rosie began the classic move deep in his own half. Webb then found the ball in the middle of the park and swept it wide to Cunningham on the right wing.

The tall number 11 coolly worked wonders on the touchline, twisting and turning past a bemused Hart. He then drove in an inch perfect cross for Rosie to head past Watson.

In the second half, the visitors rallied a little and came close to snatching an equaliser. Ex-Rovers favourite Steve Stott was looking dangerous up front. He was also booked for a silly foul on Cooper.

'Church brought on Pinnock and Volrath in a determined attempt to come back at Rovers but whenever they did find an opening skipper Maurice O'Connell, making a welcome return to the side after injury, was on hand to make brave clearances. Atwood always looked assured in goal.

In the last minute, Rovers put the result beyond any doubt.

Chris Hanks pounced on an appalling back pass and made no mistake in firing home for his tenth goal of the season.

Rovers manager Phil Mullen said it had been a "tough team to kill off".

Phil said: "We were the better side over the three games, but all credit to them. We seemed to relax a bit in the second half and they came back at them again and the pressure paid off with another goal."

Assistant Pat Lynch was full of praise for goalscorer Mark Rosegreen.

Pat said: "He played superbly and was always full of running. It was a typical cup tie, full of end to end excitement. All of the team was great."

And so it's Bedworth, and little opportunity for the Rovers' lads to get over the second round marathon.

The Warwickshire team has been going through troubled time recently. Manager John Mason resigned after the first qualifying round tie against Bourne Town which ended in a 1-1 draw.

John Hannah then took over the hot seat and United won the replay 4-3. In the second qualifying round they were 3-2 winners at Barton Rovers.

On their current league form, United don't appear to be much of a threat to Rovers' future cup progress, but with the recent signing of former Eire international Jimmy Holmes they are hoping for a quick turnaround in their fortunes.

Kick-off at the Victoria Ground is 3pm.

A LAST-GASP goal by Mark Rosegreen hauled Rovers back from the brink of defeat after they had squandered a second-minute lead.

A bumper crowd of nearly 1,000 were at the Victoria Ground to watch this exciting FA Cup second qualifying tie.

Rovers got a dream start, taking the lead after two minutes.

John Ford fired in a low drive from just outside the box and Rosegreen placed a diving header wide of Watson.

The second half proved to be even more frantic. Church showed their true attacking form and grabbed an equaliser after 56 minutes through ex-Rovers man Steve Statt.

Rovers then came back but were dealt a blow when Webb was sent off for dissent.

Their problems escalated after 81 minutes when Royston Richardson put the visitors ahead.

The Alvechurch fans went wild and many supporters began to drift home convinced they had seen the winning goal.

But Rovers surged forward and with two minutes left the ball ran loose for Rosegreen to pop up to slot home his eighth goal of the season.

Harriers buck up for Gola League bid

Following the Harriers' dismal Gola League display against Nuneaton it was suggested they needed to freshen up with two or three new faces from within the squad. Well, "We will be delighted," said management, as several key players have been associated with the club since, with the highlight being Alistair Robertson working from the middle of defence.

Several key players were expected to fill places this season, with Ian Benbow, Mick Jobbins and Pat Heard among those working from the Midland County Under-19 teams next Wednesday in the Midland League game.

When the Harriers played Walsall at the weekend — which had been criticised by the club — John Allen said: "We will be working from the group and will be using Alistair Robertson."

"We'll be delighted to be involved — we are a good team."

Harriers took back the lead on Wednesday in the Midland League game against Runcorn.

● Mark Rosegreen scored a brilliant goal against Runcorn.

Match reports round up

Harriers opened the scoring — Rosegreen from the kick off.

There was no score after six minutes — Woodhall and Graham Mackenzie after 45 minutes.

And then dribbled goalward. His quick snap shot beat several defenders reeling but the superb effort was also saved by Davies.

There were seconds of added time and then Rosegreen scored from the kick off.

The Harriers had begun 1–0 within seconds of proving and scoring with a long range shot to match the winner.
